"It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it… and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied… and it is all one." ~ M.F.K. The 9th Annual WCSF Chefs Gathering - Georgia State Farmers' Market in Forest Park

Ok so I have been eating a lot within the past few days ughhh, I feel like way too stuffed.  Autumn is "fest" season and I guess I have to learn what I can eat and what I should just say no to.  Hmmmm ok, sounds easy.

Not bad Not bad

So I have been checkin myself out lately, and I think I almost like what I see.  I wasn't lookin too bad at all on vacay huh LOL No wonder the trip offers?  LOL  Atkins is the ish that and 5 miles a day---power walking!!  I'm sure I will gain some weight back over the next lil bit.  Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

Next Stop...

BTW I have decided on my next vacation.  Prague, Vienna and Budapest 2011.  I'm quite bold to go it alone.  I like it better that way.  I have no one to please, no one to divert my attention.  I love travelling alone.  I was thinking December however, with so many people mentioning how cold it will be during that time (even though the cold has never bothered me), I may delay it until spring.  We'll see.  Also, October 2011, it's going to be Ocho Rios, Belize and Cozumel,  some Jazz Cruise that I ran across.  I mean you only live once!

I want to give my son, Jordan, a surprise graduation present.  I am not sure what I am going to do.  He likes travelling but he isn't into it all like that.  We'll see.

By the way,,,

I haven't forgot that I was supposed to finish the story.  I get a little bored with myself quite easy.  Like  ughh shut up Lena, you boring me.  Is that ADD? Perhaps.

Today at USA Today

Part 2 of the story, diverting for a minute then back to the original story.

Soo I am sitting at work, thanks to cutbacks and layoffos and all I happen to be the only one there today.  This means I do everyyyyyything which includes greeting the FEDEX dude.  This black dude comes to the counter rings the bell. My office is a little distance from the door.  It took me a few minutes.  I get to the counter, (to make a long story short) he kind of flirts with me saying,,,,"it took you long enough".  I was like "well I'm alone so blah blah blah".  Somehow  and for some reason he says "oh so you alone? you dont have a man?"

I decided to play along and said no, not really.  He said well let me get your number and maybe late late tonight I can come through.

I laughed inside.

P.S.  I did find it cute that he thought I was in my 20s
to be continued...

Story Time...

I am going to begin a story ....cut to another story, then finish. How's that? (pardon typos, incomplete thoughts and anything else you may notice that doesn't make sense).  I actually did a spell check but didn't edit for ebonics or anything like that LOL

I will entitle this story –La Diferance’?

Kind of my Italian, Cataluyan? French word? LOL Anyway, I am going to be quite facetious in my delivery but I must say I was thoroughly intrigued and perhaps even learned something.

La Diferance
Cultural Difference. I had an ah-ha moment while in Pisa, heading on a tour to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I’m hoping to word it so it makes sense. First, I will give my “Fat Albert” lesson learned then I will give my supportive information IE the story. This post will relate to some (maybe most) black women and the reputation of being loud, over independent, won’t shut up, our supposed lack of discipline and self control.

I was getting off the ship deciding to take on Pisa, Italy myself ixnay on the tourfay (pig latin shtoopid lol see how ambidextrious I am LOL) <<<-----humor. I was walking towards the bus that was to take me somewhere that I had no clue but was informed that I could catch another local bus that would take me to a train station that would lead me to another bus that would, at some point get me to the tower. In my journey,  I noticed a couple ahead of me negotiating a taxi at one of the stops. I sort of loitered around trying to decide if I was going to get lucky and get some information as to how I could get to Pisa in one piece-A. At some point, the male (Ahkbar--his real name) of the duo (who I later learned was from Kuwait), obviously noticing that I was alone (and recognized that I was from the cruise ship) said we are heading to Pisa, why don’t you come get lost with us LOL (sigh of relief)

Ahkbar went to the terminal, he purchased the tickets for his wife, me and himself. 1) me, being the total stranger.  I was sort of thrown off because I was insistent on paying my own way considering the fact this was our first interaction.  I didn't know how to react to such a kind gesture.  Living in Atlanta, nothing of the sorts has happened often, if ever.

He ushered us into some café ordered each of us a Latte and told us to wait for him at a particular table, he would go for a smoke and be right back. I was floored LOL It made me realize just how long it has been that I have been in the company of a man in that way. Taking care of my needs, caring, confidant, secure and taking such control and just took charge of a situation. I liked the feeling.

At the next station, to show my gratitude (so I thought), I went to the window and bought tickets for each of us for our next leg. I will say that Ahkbar was not pleased with this at all. I could sense a feeling from him that left him very uncomfortable that a woman would do these things such as this. He was really displeased about my show of independence. (A kind gesture as far as I was concerned). I think I did the “sista neck roll even”. *thinking* “Shoot, I don’t need NO man to do nothing for me, I can do it myself” (PAUSE) It was at this moment that I felt like an american black woman.  I was perpertuating the stereotype.  It really made me reflect on myself.

It was not a front on Ahkbars part either.  He absolutely would not let go of the issue to the point that it disturbed me some that he would not accept my kind gesture as just that.  He made it known to me the Middle Eastern culture.  After we got on the train, it was like a 35 minute dissertation on the culture.  Yeah, that's what we american people of color are lacking---culture.

So anyway, I sat back just kind of observing them together, how she was not passive or subservient but you could tell she had a lot of respect for her husband and his position. She was use to what I thought was so profound LOL I think I had a quick jealous moment. Note: throughout our entire interchange, I really did a lot of observing and reflecting.

At one point though, I was listening to Ahkbar trying to get directions from one of the citizens of whatever town in Italy we were in, and I thought he misinterpreted what the person said and I stepped up to him (like I GOT THIS!!) and said "no, I think he said we need to catch Bus #1, or something to that effect. (This is the killer part)

Ahkbar said in a gentle but firm manner, “you listen to me, I am right, I am the man, I take care of you”. In other words, slow ya role, I got this, shut up and let me do what I am suppose to do. Again, I loved it. It was at this point that I was thinking hmmm usually I would just keep on blabbing away, fussing about it to Joe Blow X (in the US), how wrong he was about the bus # and if we get lost how mad I was going to be and don’t be telling me what to do, you ain't my daddy and would probably have stormed off mad going my own way.

Instead, I sort of fell back and went back to join his wife.

To be continued.

Sooooooooooooooo

I sit here feeling so down missing Europe.  Even though that is not my first time in Europe, the first time doesnt count.  I was so young and didnt appreciate it as I should have.  I was in the Air Force and was so closed minded that I rarely ever left the base or involved myself with anything non american.  How silly.  Now I have a VERY fond appreciation of European culture.  I absolutely love it.  I am working on a way to "make it happen".

I feel a stronggg connection for some reason.  I'm still trying to figure why I want to be there so bad.  My recent trip confirmed it.  It was everything that I thought it would be.  I don't know what other women of color experiences have been but let's just say I met an Australian, Sicilian, Irish guy, Jamaican, a Parisian LOL that I fell in love with LOL well not really but I know I could have LOL

I am invited to Australia and Paris absolutely right now, all expenses paid.  I need more vacation time in a year.  OK I have 4 weeks and that doesnt seem to be enough.  *sigh*

Living there.  It's going to happen, I am going to make it happen.  That's just me.

Field of Greens Festival October 3, 2010

I know I know

So I go half way across the world and  back & the only thing I can think to blog about is my dog?  I know I know--lame!

I had a wonderful time in Europe!  I want to be able to have the patience to journal my daily adventures however, I just don't have the patience to do it the way I have seen it done on other travel blogs.

I WANT to do this nice old pictoral thingie by day lol but I just can't get into it.  I wanted to do it while it was fresh in my head, now hell I don't remember where some of the pics were taken LOL I'm so lame!

I even got so lazy that I did a slide show and of course all the pics are out of order and all mixed between.  I'm so funny!!

Have you ever typed a bunch of very intelligable garble, correct verb and noun placement LOL I'm talking like a bunnchhhhhh of stuff, then hit post, send or enter to display it and you do something wrong and everything you typed just goes away?  Like you try to hit the back button to recover? And nothing?  That is like super uber frustrating and that is what happened to me.  Hate when I don't save something or at least copy it to some clipboard just in case that happens. LOL  Like awwww man where did it go?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Well just "F" it!!!!!!!

Well, that is the story of what occurred (and I'm sticking to it).  Who wants to say that they are too lazy? LOL

Let me at least add the slideshow....brb

P.s even now I am about to hit publish post because if I screw this up, I am not blogging until I get over it LOL

Been A While

UPDATE:  I bought a good camera yayyy!!!!!!!

As you can tell, I'm not the best blogger out there LOL I'm lazy and blogging is time consuming.  Anyway, I leave on Friday @ 1:50 PM headed to Boston, then to Paris then to Barcelona.  I'm super uber excited.  I've lost 25 pounds in less than a month so I can have room for all of the foods that I am going to eat.  Why did I come upon an article that said binge eating is the worse thing a person can do and that the long term affects could effect you for the rest of your life.  OH WELL.  I gots ta do it!!!  Fresh pasta and wine!!!!  Ahh the life in Italy.  Maybe one day soon, I will live there? Hmmmm, we'll see :O)

Searching.....Searching....Searching.....

Ok I am still looking for getting the most out of whatever Itinerary for Euro Trip 2010.  I have found an interesting group to possibly travel with.  This trip is looking like a winner. It's hittiing all the spots that I want to check out and activities.

I keep getting sidetracked because as I am doing my research, I see so many other beautiful sites that are great places to see.  ie Egypt, Thailand, Switzerland, Bang cock LOL I mean Bangkok, Prague, Budapest, Vietman, just to mention a few.  I decided to keep in my the main places that I initially wanted to venture out to see and perhaps put the other points of interest on my future "to do" list.

The places still remain, Rome Italy, AMALFI Coast, South of France and Barcelona Spain.  I have found a way  to be able to hit up all these spots very reasonably.  So far my trip consists of flying into Barcelona, Voyager of the Seas cruise to Italy, well wait let me post the map:

This actually looks like everything I want in a vacation.  We shall see!!

Lena the Farmer?

Yes, it's hot as hades and I am headed to someone's farm down in south georgia.  That should be fun!  I hope it's not similar to picking cotton LOL or else you can just drop me off at the farmers market.

Let it be known that Lena will try anything once, maybe twice. I don't speak on anything that I haven't done, And yes while in NoPlace, Mississippi, (this one time), I saw some stuff out in a field and it dawned on me that it was ummmm COTTON!  I was like d*mn cotton really grows? LOL  After I picked this much (see photos above), I was tired as the dickens. Yes, the dickens!  I couldn't imagine having to actually do it or get my ass beat LOL gone beat me NOW because I am not doing this slave ish LOL and for chitterlings??? Pshhh please, I'll take "beating" for $500 Chuck!

As my friends and I were out in the field having a moment of disbelief, suddenly there was a solemn moment.  It began to rain.  It was like while we were out there laughing and being facetious, the souls of our ancestors were awaken and it began to pour the tears of my ancestors.  We all sort of stopped and gave a unrehearsed moment of silence and it was just a deep moment.  I can't describe it better than that.  Whew! I had a moment there.  Farming sparked that emotion, well that and I am a Cancer.  Anywho.

On my way a farming bloggers and bloggettes, pray for ya girl!! Yee hawww (I think thats what I say) LOL or is that Cowboying?

ciao

Destination Europe

Well my bloggers and bloggettes LOL I have made up my mind, Rome Italy will be my destination this year.  Eurorail around Italy, France and a few other points of interest.  My travel agent is hooking me up with huge layovers in Paris and Moscow (I'm hoping she swings Barcelona instead of Moscow? ).  My tentative dates are Sep 3-12, 2010.  But subject to change due to a couple of events that I am part of, we shall see.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to play tourist by staying in some ritzy hotel OR if I want to rough it by finding some hostel to kick it in LOL.  After the movie "Hostel" hmmmmm I dunno.  Having lived in 3rd world countries, it's pretty hard to scare me but that movie was something else LOL  at the same time it sounds very exciting.

I guess I just have to do this alone...

For years I have been trying to get the people that I know to do a "girlfriend" or "family" trip abroad (ie Europe).  Unfortunately, to no avail.  Perhaps it is only my desire to travel and see other things.  I think that I have decided that I have to accept the fact that travelling and/or back packing across Europe will be my solo journey.

It kind of disappoints me that people that I know don't want to see anything more or experience anything more than what's inside their box.  Why have friends that you really have nothing in common with?  Am I being too hard on em?  My frustration  is of them wanting me to be part of their regular life versus them trying to be part of who I am?  My motto:  In order to grow, sometimes have to let go.

I'm on my soap box this morning but point blank--we have nothing in common.  I would not choose to be in an unfullfilling relationship so why would I choose to remain in unfullfilling friendships?

Ok now that I have gotten those thoughts out of the way, let me tell you I have been studying my future places of interest.  I am planning to hit up Rome (and AMALFI Coast), Paris, Barcelona and if I manage to hustle up an unintended location--then so be it!!!

Lights On!

OooOooooh how about Chef-packing across Europe?!  I do still have my Barcelona chef hook up, considering Mandarin Oriental Barcelona is where I am suppose to be working as we speak.  Again, I guess it isn't where God wants me to be right now.  He gives us the desires of our hearts so HE must know and perhaps He is moving people, places and things to make it happen, to make it happen comfortably.

Ok let me stop googling

Back Packing Across Europe?

I have this desire that just won't go away.  I think it was sparked by my years in the Air Force way back when.  Travelling.

Backpacking across Europe for a few weeks is something in my future.  It was something that I was already suppose to have done.  I thought this or that would have occurred by now but it hasn't.  I guess it isn't what God wants me to do just yet.

I refuse to let my overwhelming desire to travel out weigh common sense.  I'm not stupid but the desire just gets stronger every day.  Maybe I will go and it not be everything that I want it to be, then again maybe I will go and it will be everything I want it to be.  I still have to go just to see.

I don't know what makes me think that whatever it is that I am searching for, I will find in Europe.   I knew I shouldn't have Googled:  Backpacking across Europe.  I found popular backpacker destinations and think that this would probably be my route.  Add Italy and Spain to this and it would be a total thumbsup!!

The Big Three: England, France, and Germany are three of the biggest countries in Europe and are probably the most popular tourist destinations on the continent. Many backpackers, especially those from the states, start their journey in London. A few days in the huge British city and a backpacker can hop a train across the “Chunnel” and wind up in Paris before they know it. With the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, and more, there are plenty of things to see in Paris, and there are a ton of hostels and cheap hotels for any traveler's budget. Next, backpackers can either head North for the Benelux trip, Southeast to Switzerland, or head South to check out the warmth of Southern France. Many travelers also take the time to head into Germany, stopping in Frankfurt before visiting the beautiful capital Berlin, a favorite among backpackers and young travelers.

the saga will continue......

Tour Martin Luther King Jr Memorial

Out of the Kitchen.....

I can't believe that I have lived in Atlanta for 16 years and am just now getting to the Martin Luther King Jr Historical Compound.  I actually travel the Auburn Ave area on some occasions but never even took the time to visit.

My mom came to visit for the 4th weekend and I finally took the time to show respect to The King of Civil Rights.  I must say that I was truly inspired and honored.

I felt such an overwhelming serenity.  And the thought of all the people that have stood in the very spot that I stood sent chills through my spine.

Most of all, I thought of our President, our first African American President having stood at that very spot honoring Mr King.  Why had it took me so long to show my respects?  Hmmmm....interesting.

My mother and I truly enjoyed ourselves.  That Eternal Flame was just beautiful.  I am going to have to make another trip during a less busy time.  Thank you Mr King.

Perfect Example

I have the perfect example.  A co-worker gave me these fresh veggies today.  She picked them from her garden.  Don't they look DELISH?  No chemicals, no nothing.  Just pure delightful veggies.  I am actually preparing some of the squash now.  Steamed squash, fresh ground pepper and a lil thyme, hmph hmph hmph.  Orgasmic! LOL Oops I mean organic *cheese*

Someone pleaseeeeeee send me a garden FedEx LOL

Fresh? Organic? Raw?

So I am riding around at lunch time today, I found myself looking for fresh food.  Being a chef that uses 90 % fresh ingredients,  I am finding that the thoughts of eating processed and/or manufactured foods is nauseating.

Ah ha moment?  Yes, indeed.  More and more nothing is more satisfying than fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses etc.

What I had the desire for today:  Sauteed kale and a nice organic salad. Yum!  What I ended up with was some disgusting Burrito from Taco Bell.  This has GOTS to stop!!!! LOL

As I am driving back to the jay oh bee, it dawned on me that I am on the verge of transitioning to fresh, organic and seriously contemplating "raw".

I would so love to have a garden that I could go fetch the day's dinner from.  Something to ponder.

Go Red For Women

About the Movement

Go Red For Women celebrates the energy, passion and power we have as women to band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke.

Learn the Basics

We're fighting heart disease and saving women's lives.

What is Go Red For Women?

In 2004, the American Heart Association (AHA) faced a challenge. Cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women were not paying attention. In fact, many even dismissed it as an “older man’s disease.” To dispel the myths and raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women, the American Heart Association created Go Red For Women – a passionate, emotional, social initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

What is the goal of Go Red For Women?

Go Red For Women encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, and also action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart healthy life.

In 2010, the American Heart Association set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20% while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% by the year 2020.

Why is the red dress the symbol of women and heart disease?

In 2003, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the American Heart Association and other organizations committed to women’s health joined together to raise awareness of women and heart disease. The NHLBI introduced the red dress as a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness and the American Heart Association adopted this symbol to create synergy among all organizations committed to fighting this cause.

By working together to advance this important cause, the American Heart Association, NHLBI, and other women’s health groups will have a greater impact than any one group could have alone.

Be sure to register to get your red dress pin.

Why do Go Red For Women and other red dress campaigns target women instead of men and women?

In the past, heart disease and heart attack have been predominantly associated with men. Historically, men have been the subjects of the research done to understand heart disease and stroke, which has been the basis for treatment guidelines and programs. This led to an oversimplified, distorted view of heart disease and risk, which has worked to the detriment of women.

Because women have been largely ignored as a specific group, their awareness of their risk of this often-preventable disease has suffered. Only 55 percent of women realize heart disease is their No. 1 killer and less than half know what are considered healthy levels for cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. The Go Red For Women movement works to make sure women know they are at risk so they can take action to protect their health.

How does the American Heart Association use funds raised from Go Red For Women activities?

The American Heart Association uses all revenues from local and National Go Red For Women activities to support awareness, research, education and community programs to benefit women.

These funds allow us to help women by offering educational programs, advancing women’s understanding about their risk for heart disease and providing tools and motivation to help women reduce their risk to protect their health. For example, the Go Red Heart CheckUp has engaged over 2 million women to learn their risk of heart disease. Based on our own research, a woman who “Goes Red” follows an exercise routine, eats healthier diet, visits her doctor for important tests and influences others by talking about heart health. (Source: Go Red For Women Database Survey, fall 2007)

Funds raised by Go Red For Women activities also support research to discover scientific knowledge about heart health. We turn this science into materials and tools that healthcare providers and decision- makers can use to help women. Scientific guidelines on women and healthcare providers receive the most up-to-date strategies and treatments tailored to a woman’s individual risk. Toolkits, pocket versions of guidelines for women, and special reports, and continuing medical education give healthcare providers the tools to ensure that women are being treated according to the guidelines. Through our national sponsor, Merck & Co., over 200,000 healthcare provider offices have received Go Red For Women educational tools to use with patients.

We value the trust placed in us by our donors, supporters, and general public. We make the association’s finance as transparent as possible. In fact, the American Heart Association has consistently met the high standards of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance (WGA), the premier organization for evaluating charitable organizations.

How do corporate sponsorships help support Go Red For Women?

Financial support from corporations helps fund the American Heart Association programs and initiatives to advance the mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The American Heart Association is always seeking ways to increase communication with the public and to create tools and resources to help them manage and prevent heart disease.

Sponsorship dollars allow us to improve our educational resources like our Web site and other materials in order to deliver the information in a way that men, women and children find useful. All corporate relationships must comply with the association's corporate relations policies and receive approval from two committees representing executive staff and volunteers. Compliance is required in areas such as sponsors’ commercial messages, advertising and brand messages so that no endorsement of a company product is implied.

Funds donated to Go Red For Women have impacted women across the nation.

Over 2 million women have learned their personal risk of developing heart disease by taking the Go Red Heart CheckUp
Over 200,000 healthcare provider offices have received critical patient information on women and heart disease
Over 900,000 women have joined the fight. Women who join Go Red For Women receive important information that allows them to take action to improve their health:

Wine of the Week - Frontera Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Chile Wine
So I have been trying many different wines lately. Last night, with the recommendation of the package store attendant, I purchased this one. I am usually a semi-sweet wine type (Sweet Riesling or Sweet Red), this one turns out to be a great buy! Full bodied, I won't say that it is dry but the finish seems to be a little dry. It is a pretty decent wine for the price. Besides, I had never tried a blend before this one. Not bad--not bad at all!!

Chef of the Month

Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto

Photobucket

Masaharu Morimoto (森本正治 Morimoto Masaharu; born May 26, 1955 in Hiroshima, Japan) is a well-known Japanese chef, best-known as the third (and last) Iron Chef Japanese on the TV cooking show Iron Chef, and an Iron Chef on its spinoff, Iron Chef America. Morimoto's costume on Iron Chef is silver with red trim and a picture on the back of Japanese and American flags tied together in a sheaf, while on Iron Chef America he dons the standard blue Iron Chef outfit with white trim. In his professional life, to distinguish himself from his on-screen persona, Morimoto wears (purely aesthetic) glasses.

Morimoto received practical training in sushi and traditional Kaiseki cuisine in Hiroshima, and opened his own restaurant in that city in 1980. Influenced by western cooking styles, he decided to sell his restaurant in 1985 in order to travel around the United States and his travels further influenced his fusion style of cuisine. He established himself in Manhattan, New York City, and worked in some of that city's more prestigious restaurants, including the dining area for Sony Corporation's executive staff and visiting V.I.Ps., the Sony Club, where he was executive chef, and the exclusive Japanese restaurant Nobu, where he was head chef.

It was during his time at Nobu where he got his start on the Iron Chef television show. Several months after the weekly run of Iron Chef ended in 1999, he left Nobu, eventually opening his own Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia in 2001. He has plans to open a second Morimoto restaurant in New York City.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Morimoto currently appears as an Iron Chef in Iron Chef America, a spin-off from the original Japanese "Iron Chef" series.

Ask Chef L Boogie: Olive Oil as Anal Sex Lubricant?

Photobucket

Hi Chef L Boogie:

Two months ago I met an amazing man from Spain, we had a hot affair during the time that he was visiting my city and he told me that he was a collector of olive oil. We talked about having anal sex during the time that he was here but it never happened. Anyway, I am planning a trip to Spain to visit him and I thought about bringing him a nice bottle of olive oil to be used as a lubricant for our anal adventures! But my question is: is it a safe lubricant in terms of keeping the condom from breaking?

Thank you! Hot for Spain

Dear Hot for Spain,

Olive oil + latex condom = broken condom! Avoid using latex with any oil, oil-based lube, or petroleum products.

That's the quick answer, but there's much more that can be said about safer sex, condoms, lube, and erotic olive oil options.

A good lubricant for anal sex is essential. Lube makes anal sex more pleasurable, decreases risk of condom-breakage, and helps protect sensitive tissue. If you are using latex condoms, or any other latex barriers such as gloves or dental dams, olive oil should be avoided because oils and oil-based lubricants and lotions cause latex to break down. For any sexual activity using latex barriers, water-based or silicone-based lubricants are recommended.

Water-based lube, the most oft-recommended kind, can be used safely with latex and with silicone toys and it cleans up easily. Water-based lubes abound at sex novelty stores and drugstores alike. For anal sex, look for non-flavored varieties (flavored lube often has sugar and other ingredients that may cause irritation in penetrative anal or vaginal sex). Water-based lubricants may be somewhat sticky when they dry, but can be refreshed easily by adding water, saliva, or more lube.

Some people prefer silicone-based lube for anal sex because it typically has a slicker quality, stays wetter longer, and does not dry sticky. Like water-based lube, silicone is safe for use with latex. The body does not absorb silicone, which means it won't clog pores, but it may be more difficult to wash off (and out) of the body. Silicone lube will damage silicone sex toys, so the two should not be used together unless there is a condom on the toy.

Olive oil may be an option for lubricant if you use polyurethane condoms instead of latex. However, a word of caution with regard to olive oil and orifices: It may be difficult to remove, may clog pores, or may cause infection or irritation, so it is not recommended for internal use (except for eating, of course). Olive oil may be used erotically in other ways though, as an external masturbatory lubricator (probably safer for use on the penis than the clitoris) for example, or as massage oil with very little risk of any of the health concerns noted above (thought it may stain sheets). If you decide to use olive oil externally first, and have sex after, even if you use silicone or water-based lube, polyurethane condoms are still recommended rather than latex because the condom may have come into contact with olive oil residue left on the sheets or on other parts of the body.

Here's to overseas adventures with slippery substances!

Ask Chef L Boogie: Is Sperm Fattening?

Dear chef L Boogie,

I’m very vain about my figure. I’m in great shape, ride my bike 120 miles a week, watch what I eat, and count every calorie. So, here’s my question: How many calories are in semen? My boyfriend and I enjoy oral sex about three times a week. Is it fattening?

Shy Girl

-----

Shy Girl,

When sperm leaves the human male, it travels at a speed of 27 miles-an-hour. It weighs in at about a teaspoon, contains three times the vitamins of a Jolly Rancher and fairly explodes with protein (about the same as an egg white.) As for calories? 5-7. Fewer than a cherry Life Saver. Bon Appetit!

Best Found Recipe of the Month - Banana Pancakes with Rum Syrup

Ready in: 30-60 minutes

Ingredients:
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup milk
1/4 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons corn oil
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
1 tablespoon butter (melted)

***Rum Syrup***
1 cup pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons dark Jamaican rum

Directions:

Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl.

In a separate bowl combine milk, sugar, 2 tablespoons of the oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Add to the dry ingredients and stir until the mixture is almost smooth.

Next, fold the bananas into the batter. Let this set, loosely covered, for about 25 minutes.

Combine the melted butter with the remaining oil. Place a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Pour a teaspoon of the butter and oil mixture in the skillet and heat.

For each pancake, pour 1/4 cup batter into the pan and cook until small bubbles form on the top, usually about 1 minute.

Turn the pancake over and cook an additional 30 to 45 seconds. Proceed with the rest of the batter, adding more of the bitter and oil mixture to the pan as necessary.

Serve warm with the rum syrup.

For Rum Syrup: Combine all the ingredients in a 4 cup microwave safe measuring cup. Cook on medium high power for 2 minutes, until the butter is melted. Stir and serve hot.
