"It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it… and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied… and it is all one." ~ M.F.K. Last night musician Kelis hosted a dinner presented by Belvedere Vodka in celebration of her upcoming album, Flesh Tone, and revealed her
unknown passion: cooking. Held in a private bungalow at the W South Beach,
Kelis welcomed guests including Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine, DJ Benny Benassi, DJ ...Rashida, Chicago Bears player Adewale Ogunieye, Kansas City Chiefs player Thomas Jones, DJ/musician Calvin Harris, Burns, JackSplash and more, who all enjoyed the menu she created and prepared herself.

Taste of the World 2010 - Africa's Children's Fund - 10-10-10 Hyatt Regency Atlanta

So I had an awesome time at Taste of the World 2010.  I was very very very busy.  I took a few pics, not really the quality of pics that I would like to have taken the time to take.  There were many beautiful people clad in African attire that I wish I took the opportunity to take snap shots of.  Drats!!

Not bad Not bad

So I have been checkin myself out lately, and I think I almost like what I see.  I wasn't lookin too bad at all on vacay huh LOL No wonder the trip offers?  LOL  Atkins is the ish that and 5 miles a day---power walking!!  I'm sure I will gain some weight back over the next lil bit.  Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

Next Stop...

BTW I have decided on my next vacation.  Prague, Vienna and Budapest 2011.  I'm quite bold to go it alone.  I like it better that way.  I have no one to please, no one to divert my attention.  I love travelling alone.  I was thinking December however, with so many people mentioning how cold it will be during that time (even though the cold has never bothered me), I may delay it until spring.  We'll see.  Also, October 2011, it's going to be Ocho Rios, Belize and Cozumel,  some Jazz Cruise that I ran across.  I mean you only live once!

I want to give my son, Jordan, a surprise graduation present.  I am not sure what I am going to do.  He likes travelling but he isn't into it all like that.  We'll see.

By the way,,,

I haven't forgot that I was supposed to finish the story.  I get a little bored with myself quite easy.  Like  ughh shut up Lena, you boring me.  Is that ADD? Perhaps.

Today at USA Today

Part 2 of the story, diverting for a minute then back to the original story.

Soo I am sitting at work, thanks to cutbacks and layoffos and all I happen to be the only one there today.  This means I do everyyyyyything which includes greeting the FEDEX dude.  This black dude comes to the counter rings the bell. My office is a little distance from the door.  It took me a few minutes.  I get to the counter, (to make a long story short) he kind of flirts with me saying,,,,"it took you long enough".  I was like "well I'm alone so blah blah blah".  Somehow  and for some reason he says "oh so you alone? you dont have a man?"

I decided to play along and said no, not really.  He said well let me get your number and maybe late late tonight I can come through.

I laughed inside.

P.S.  I did find it cute that he thought I was in my 20s
to be continued...

Story Time...

I am going to begin a story ....cut to another story, then finish. How's that? (pardon typos, incomplete thoughts and anything else you may notice that doesn't make sense).  I actually did a spell check but didn't edit for ebonics or anything like that LOL

I will entitle this story –La Diferance’?

Kind of my Italian, Cataluyan? French word? LOL Anyway, I am going to be quite facetious in my delivery but I must say I was thoroughly intrigued and perhaps even learned something.

La Diferance
Cultural Difference. I had an ah-ha moment while in Pisa, heading on a tour to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I’m hoping to word it so it makes sense. First, I will give my “Fat Albert” lesson learned then I will give my supportive information IE the story. This post will relate to some (maybe most) black women and the reputation of being loud, over independent, won’t shut up, our supposed lack of discipline and self control.

I was getting off the ship deciding to take on Pisa, Italy myself ixnay on the tourfay (pig latin shtoopid lol see how ambidextrious I am LOL) <<<-----humor. I was walking towards the bus that was to take me somewhere that I had no clue but was informed that I could catch another local bus that would take me to a train station that would lead me to another bus that would, at some point get me to the tower. In my journey,  I noticed a couple ahead of me negotiating a taxi at one of the stops. I sort of loitered around trying to decide if I was going to get lucky and get some information as to how I could get to Pisa in one piece-A. At some point, the male (Ahkbar--his real name) of the duo (who I later learned was from Kuwait), obviously noticing that I was alone (and recognized that I was from the cruise ship) said we are heading to Pisa, why don’t you come get lost with us LOL (sigh of relief)

Ahkbar went to the terminal, he purchased the tickets for his wife, me and himself. 1) me, being the total stranger.  I was sort of thrown off because I was insistent on paying my own way considering the fact this was our first interaction.  I didn't know how to react to such a kind gesture.  Living in Atlanta, nothing of the sorts has happened often, if ever.

He ushered us into some café ordered each of us a Latte and told us to wait for him at a particular table, he would go for a smoke and be right back. I was floored LOL It made me realize just how long it has been that I have been in the company of a man in that way. Taking care of my needs, caring, confidant, secure and taking such control and just took charge of a situation. I liked the feeling.

At the next station, to show my gratitude (so I thought), I went to the window and bought tickets for each of us for our next leg. I will say that Ahkbar was not pleased with this at all. I could sense a feeling from him that left him very uncomfortable that a woman would do these things such as this. He was really displeased about my show of independence. (A kind gesture as far as I was concerned). I think I did the “sista neck roll even”. *thinking* “Shoot, I don’t need NO man to do nothing for me, I can do it myself” (PAUSE) It was at this moment that I felt like an american black woman.  I was perpertuating the stereotype.  It really made me reflect on myself.

It was not a front on Ahkbars part either.  He absolutely would not let go of the issue to the point that it disturbed me some that he would not accept my kind gesture as just that.  He made it known to me the Middle Eastern culture.  After we got on the train, it was like a 35 minute dissertation on the culture.  Yeah, that's what we american people of color are lacking---culture.

So anyway, I sat back just kind of observing them together, how she was not passive or subservient but you could tell she had a lot of respect for her husband and his position. She was use to what I thought was so profound LOL I think I had a quick jealous moment. Note: throughout our entire interchange, I really did a lot of observing and reflecting.

At one point though, I was listening to Ahkbar trying to get directions from one of the citizens of whatever town in Italy we were in, and I thought he misinterpreted what the person said and I stepped up to him (like I GOT THIS!!) and said "no, I think he said we need to catch Bus #1, or something to that effect. (This is the killer part)

Ahkbar said in a gentle but firm manner, “you listen to me, I am right, I am the man, I take care of you”. In other words, slow ya role, I got this, shut up and let me do what I am suppose to do. Again, I loved it. It was at this point that I was thinking hmmm usually I would just keep on blabbing away, fussing about it to Joe Blow X (in the US), how wrong he was about the bus # and if we get lost how mad I was going to be and don’t be telling me what to do, you ain't my daddy and would probably have stormed off mad going my own way.

Instead, I sort of fell back and went back to join his wife.

To be continued.

Sooooooooooooooo

I sit here feeling so down missing Europe.  Even though that is not my first time in Europe, the first time doesnt count.  I was so young and didnt appreciate it as I should have.  I was in the Air Force and was so closed minded that I rarely ever left the base or involved myself with anything non american.  How silly.  Now I have a VERY fond appreciation of European culture.  I absolutely love it.  I am working on a way to "make it happen".

I feel a stronggg connection for some reason.  I'm still trying to figure why I want to be there so bad.  My recent trip confirmed it.  It was everything that I thought it would be.  I don't know what other women of color experiences have been but let's just say I met an Australian, Sicilian, Irish guy, Jamaican, a Parisian LOL that I fell in love with LOL well not really but I know I could have LOL

I am invited to Australia and Paris absolutely right now, all expenses paid.  I need more vacation time in a year.  OK I have 4 weeks and that doesnt seem to be enough.  *sigh*

Living there.  It's going to happen, I am going to make it happen.  That's just me.

Field of Greens Festival October 3, 2010

I know I know

So I go half way across the world and  back & the only thing I can think to blog about is my dog?  I know I know--lame!

I had a wonderful time in Europe!  I want to be able to have the patience to journal my daily adventures however, I just don't have the patience to do it the way I have seen it done on other travel blogs.

I WANT to do this nice old pictoral thingie by day lol but I just can't get into it.  I wanted to do it while it was fresh in my head, now hell I don't remember where some of the pics were taken LOL I'm so lame!

I even got so lazy that I did a slide show and of course all the pics are out of order and all mixed between.  I'm so funny!!

Have you ever typed a bunch of very intelligable garble, correct verb and noun placement LOL I'm talking like a bunnchhhhhh of stuff, then hit post, send or enter to display it and you do something wrong and everything you typed just goes away?  Like you try to hit the back button to recover? And nothing?  That is like super uber frustrating and that is what happened to me.  Hate when I don't save something or at least copy it to some clipboard just in case that happens. LOL  Like awwww man where did it go?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Well just "F" it!!!!!!!

Well, that is the story of what occurred (and I'm sticking to it).  Who wants to say that they are too lazy? LOL

Let me at least add the slideshow....brb

P.s even now I am about to hit publish post because if I screw this up, I am not blogging until I get over it LOL

UPDATE:  I bought a good camera yayyy!!!!!!!

As you can tell, I'm not the best blogger out there LOL I'm lazy and blogging is time consuming.  Anyway, I leave on Friday @ 1:50 PM headed to Boston, then to Paris then to Barcelona.  I'm super uber excited.  I've lost 25 pounds in less than a month so I can have room for all of the foods that I am going to eat.  Why did I come upon an article that said binge eating is the worse thing a person can do and that the long term affects could effect you for the rest of your life.  OH WELL.  I gots ta do it!!!  Fresh pasta and wine!!!!  Ahh the life in Italy.  Maybe one day soon, I will live there? Hmmmm, we'll see :O)

Wine of the Week - Frontera Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Chile Wine
So I have been trying many different wines lately. Last night, with the recommendation of the package store attendant, I purchased this one. I am usually a semi-sweet wine type (Sweet Riesling or Sweet Red), this one turns out to be a great buy! Full bodied, I won't say that it is dry but the finish seems to be a little dry. It is a pretty decent wine for the price. Besides, I had never tried a blend before this one. Not bad--not bad at all!!

Chef of the Month

Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto

Photobucket

Masaharu Morimoto (森本正治 Morimoto Masaharu; born May 26, 1955 in Hiroshima, Japan) is a well-known Japanese chef, best-known as the third (and last) Iron Chef Japanese on the TV cooking show Iron Chef, and an Iron Chef on its spinoff, Iron Chef America. Morimoto's costume on Iron Chef is silver with red trim and a picture on the back of Japanese and American flags tied together in a sheaf, while on Iron Chef America he dons the standard blue Iron Chef outfit with white trim. In his professional life, to distinguish himself from his on-screen persona, Morimoto wears (purely aesthetic) glasses.

Morimoto received practical training in sushi and traditional Kaiseki cuisine in Hiroshima, and opened his own restaurant in that city in 1980. Influenced by western cooking styles, he decided to sell his restaurant in 1985 in order to travel around the United States and his travels further influenced his fusion style of cuisine. He established himself in Manhattan, New York City, and worked in some of that city's more prestigious restaurants, including the dining area for Sony Corporation's executive staff and visiting V.I.Ps., the Sony Club, where he was executive chef, and the exclusive Japanese restaurant Nobu, where he was head chef.

It was during his time at Nobu where he got his start on the Iron Chef television show. Several months after the weekly run of Iron Chef ended in 1999, he left Nobu, eventually opening his own Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia in 2001. He has plans to open a second Morimoto restaurant in New York City.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Morimoto currently appears as an Iron Chef in Iron Chef America, a spin-off from the original Japanese "Iron Chef" series.

Ask Chef L Boogie: Olive Oil as Anal Sex Lubricant?

Photobucket

Hi Chef L Boogie:

Two months ago I met an amazing man from Spain, we had a hot affair during the time that he was visiting my city and he told me that he was a collector of olive oil. We talked about having anal sex during the time that he was here but it never happened. Anyway, I am planning a trip to Spain to visit him and I thought about bringing him a nice bottle of olive oil to be used as a lubricant for our anal adventures! But my question is: is it a safe lubricant in terms of keeping the condom from breaking?

Thank you! Hot for Spain

Dear Hot for Spain,

Olive oil + latex condom = broken condom! Avoid using latex with any oil, oil-based lube, or petroleum products.

That's the quick answer, but there's much more that can be said about safer sex, condoms, lube, and erotic olive oil options.

A good lubricant for anal sex is essential. Lube makes anal sex more pleasurable, decreases risk of condom-breakage, and helps protect sensitive tissue. If you are using latex condoms, or any other latex barriers such as gloves or dental dams, olive oil should be avoided because oils and oil-based lubricants and lotions cause latex to break down. For any sexual activity using latex barriers, water-based or silicone-based lubricants are recommended.

Water-based lube, the most oft-recommended kind, can be used safely with latex and with silicone toys and it cleans up easily. Water-based lubes abound at sex novelty stores and drugstores alike. For anal sex, look for non-flavored varieties (flavored lube often has sugar and other ingredients that may cause irritation in penetrative anal or vaginal sex). Water-based lubricants may be somewhat sticky when they dry, but can be refreshed easily by adding water, saliva, or more lube.

Some people prefer silicone-based lube for anal sex because it typically has a slicker quality, stays wetter longer, and does not dry sticky. Like water-based lube, silicone is safe for use with latex. The body does not absorb silicone, which means it won't clog pores, but it may be more difficult to wash off (and out) of the body. Silicone lube will damage silicone sex toys, so the two should not be used together unless there is a condom on the toy.

Olive oil may be an option for lubricant if you use polyurethane condoms instead of latex. However, a word of caution with regard to olive oil and orifices: It may be difficult to remove, may clog pores, or may cause infection or irritation, so it is not recommended for internal use (except for eating, of course). Olive oil may be used erotically in other ways though, as an external masturbatory lubricator (probably safer for use on the penis than the clitoris) for example, or as massage oil with very little risk of any of the health concerns noted above (thought it may stain sheets). If you decide to use olive oil externally first, and have sex after, even if you use silicone or water-based lube, polyurethane condoms are still recommended rather than latex because the condom may have come into contact with olive oil residue left on the sheets or on other parts of the body.

Ask Chef L Boogie: Is Sperm Fattening?

Dear chef L Boogie,

I’m very vain about my figure. I’m in great shape, ride my bike 120 miles a week, watch what I eat, and count every calorie. So, here’s my question: How many calories are in semen? My boyfriend and I enjoy oral sex about three times a week. Is it fattening?

Shy Girl

Shy Girl,

When sperm leaves the human male, it travels at a speed of 27 miles-an-hour. It weighs in at about a teaspoon, contains three times the vitamins of a Jolly Rancher and fairly explodes with protein (about the same as an egg white.) As for calories? 5-7. Fewer than a cherry Life Saver. Bon Appetit!

Best Found Recipe of the Month - Banana Pancakes with Rum Syrup

Ready in: 30-60 minutes

Ingredients:
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup milk
1/4 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons corn oil
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
1 tablespoon butter (melted)

***Rum Syrup***
1 cup pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons dark Jamaican rum

Directions:

Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl.

In a separate bowl combine milk, sugar, 2 tablespoons of the oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Add to the dry ingredients and stir until the mixture is almost smooth.

Next, fold the bananas into the batter. Let this set, loosely covered, for about 25 minutes.

Combine the melted butter with the remaining oil. Place a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Pour a teaspoon of the butter and oil mixture in the skillet and heat.

For each pancake, pour 1/4 cup batter into the pan and cook until small bubbles form on the top, usually about 1 minute.

Turn the pancake over and cook an additional 30 to 45 seconds. Proceed with the rest of the batter, adding more of the bitter and oil mixture to the pan as necessary.

Serve warm with the rum syrup.

For Rum Syrup: Combine all the ingredients in a 4 cup microwave safe measuring cup. Cook on medium high power for 2 minutes, until the butter is melted. Stir and serve hot.
