"It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it… and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied… and it is all one." ~ M.F.K. Foods Make You Sexy - Fact or Fiction?

With Valentine's Day around the corner, many may look to food as a way to rekindle the libido. But is this merely wishful thinking?

Like red wine, so-called love foods -- chocolate, oysters, cucumbers, strawberries and cream, licorice, alcohol -- may taste great, but will these foods tickle your libido as much as your taste buds?

According to Lawrence Cheskin, M.D., director and founder of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center, there are some foods that can keep individuals in good sexual health, but as far as supposed aphrodisiacs are concerned there is no scientific evidence that they do the trick.

"The reputed sexual effects of so-called aphrodisiacs are based in folklore, not fact, and there is no scientific proof that any food or beverage can treat sexual dysfunction or increase desire," says Cheskin. "In health, there are some food recipes that promise to spice up your food and love life, but the ingredients do not lead to better chances of sexual intercourse."

Cheskin does point out that chocolate contains certain interesting chemicals, such as phenylethylamine (also known as the "love-chemical"), that do stimulate the brain. They are found in high amounts in people who are in love, which is how we get the idea that chocolate is an aphrodisiac.

"However, eating chocolate does not raise levels of phenylethylamine in your brain and increase your libido," says Cheskin. "Candy may be dandy, but it doesn't enhance your chance for romance."

Healthier alternatives to chocolate, with the same sweet taste, are fruits like pineapple, bananas and strawberries, which contain plenty of vitamins and are high in antioxidants.

"The health value of fruit may not be sexy, but they are at least healthy," stresses Cheskin.

Oysters are another food with a reputation for increasing the libido. Cheskin calls oysters "good food" because they are low in fat and high in protein, vitamins and minerals and because they contain some nutrients that are important for the production of hormones that can improve fertility.

"There is no proof that oysters have an aphrodisiac effect," he says, "but they are good for your sexual health and your overall health."

Part of good sex health is having a good body weight because being overweight can contribute to a decreased libido and fertility. For those who want to increase their libido, Cheskin says the best approach is "to exercise and eat the right foods."

How Sexy is Your Dinner? Food as an Aphrodisiac and Sexy Recipes

It seems that the American public and product markets are obsessed with foods that nourish and heal the body. Beyond the trendy fat burning diets and Eastern teas that makes our skin glow and gives us more energy, food has been a staple and a necessity in how we communicate with and care for each other. Nothing comes closer to a cure for the common cold than grandma's homemade chicken soup. No celebration, no personal milestone would be the same (insert your personal memory here) without the breaking of bread and flow of wine with friends. These remedies and traditions were gifted to us by the many different cultures and flavors that now make up the United States.
Dark walls, dim lighting, flickering candles and the right Syrah can create the beginning of an entire love affair. Ordering or preparing the right foods might also add some steam to your night because, just like our ancestors, learned which foods can heal the body they also studied which foods inspire romance and even foods that are thought to be aphrodisiacs. Our society has always made the connection between sex and food. Our affinity and subtle humor for nuts, melons, onions and coconuts is just the surface of how closely our physical appetite is connected to our sexual appetite - I hope all of you have experienced what it's like to hunger for someone (yes you can insert a personal memory here too...go ahead and take a moment). Even America's favorite ice cream flavor, Vanilla, derives its name from vaina , the Latin word for sheath, scabbard or vagina. Let's explore some of the foods and spices that Mother Nature designed to help heat things up below the equator.
Asparagus visually strikes us as being very male. This falic relative of the lily is rich in vitamin B6, Vitamins A and C for plenty of lasting energy. Asparagus is also rich in thiamin and folic acid which has been discovered to boost the body's production of histamine that is known to help induce orgasm.

The Jury is out on the succulent leaves of Basil and Mint. Some herbalists believe that mint can decrease the longevity of the male erection and there are volumes written about pregnant women not consuming basil because it can cause very subtle uterine contractions. But this doesn't mean you can't order the mojito on your next night out on the prowl. The properties in these fragrant herbs promote circulation and create a warming affect all over the body...yes, all over!

The use of Oysters as an aphrodisiac is not just an urban legend. Actual studies have proven that these sweet and succulent little mollusks are full of minerals like calcium and zinc. Zinc is a key mineral in the production of testosterone and sperm. They are also a good source of Omega fatty acids and dopamine which will improve overall mood and possibly increase male and female libido. Caviar is also high in zinc, this romantic ingredient might enhance male functionality in many ways.

Chili Peppers, such as fiery habaneras or the warm and savory cayenne pepper, increase circulation and heart rate, a little sweat starts to form on our brows and noses when eaten similar to the anticipation of sex. These heated veggies contain a good dose of naturally occurring capsaicin which is a pain reliever.

The moist and succulent South American rain forests introduced us to what was once known as ‘the fruit of the Gods'. The Cacao bean contains a couple of mood inducing chemicals known as phenyl ethylamine and serotonin. These are chemicals that the body produces naturally and gives us the feeling of being in love. Chocolate may or may not have a direct affect on sexual arousal but it certainly elevates the mood of many women. A chocolate decadence cake might be enough make any woman lose her inhibitions.

The soft fleshy fruit of the Papaya is often visually compared to the female reproductive organs. Papaya has many nutrients that promote the production of estrogen and many African and South American tribes have used it to increase female libido and fertility. They are rich in B vitamins which are known to be the sex hormone vitamin.

Strawberries and raspberries are juicy and ripe, deep red reminder of the color of passion and love. When split in half, strawberries resemble small hearts or puckered lips and have always been a symbol of courting youth. Strawberries and warm melted chocolate will set the stage for a sexy night.

Aromatherapists believe that the scent of almonds increases sexual sensation in women. The scents of Grapefruit, Orange and other citrus fruit evoke the feeling of youth in people which can also contribute to a relaxed and inhibited mood.

The sweet spiciness of cinnamon releases pheromones in the brain that give us that "feel good" sensation and warms the body from the inside out. After cooking a spicy cinnamon based jerked chicken for that special someone burn cinnamon incense and serve a caramel cinnamon dessert.

Some of the foods listed above have been passed on by word of mouth for centuries, some are newly discovered or proven by science and some may even be urban legend based on the frat party trial and error method. No matter which, it can be a lot of fun finding out which arousing eats work best with you and your honey's chemistry.
Since we're on the subject, besides being a beauty secret of Cleopatra, Honey has a history for being an aphrodisiac. In early Europe newly married couples drank a honey based drink during the first months of marriage, many connect this to our modern day ‘honeymoon'. It is a popular Indian tradition to give the groom a gift of honey at weddings. It is probably the B vitamins and energy rush from the sugar content that has added to honey's romantic reputation.
Though these foods may have vitamins, minerals or chemicals that have an exciting and sensual reaction with our bodies any food, when presented and eaten correctly can provide a plethora of pleasure for even the stuffiest of couples. Turn down (or off) your over head lights and light cinnamon scented candles. Have a picnic in the middle of the living room floor. Feed each other with your hands, maybe blind fold each other and conduct private tastes tests with fresh juicy papaya and mangoes or fluffy soft cream puffs. The food automatically provides the body with a feeling of being happy and satisfied, your energy and creativity turn it into an aphrodisiac

I don't really like to get too personal-personal in my blog but...

So I'm absolutely thinking that everything happens for a reason.  What we think we want may not be what HE has in store for us.  Sometimes, HE has to be harsh in showing us.  I actually get it.  Once again I will say that an ENDING has created a GREAT beginning.  It has been right in front of me.  I can see clearly now.  Thanks, friend (you know who you are LOL-MD)

Adam Dell's Custody Battle with Padma Lakshmi Gets Nasty

Adam Dell's Custody Battle with Padma Lakshmi Gets Nasty

Earlier this week, Adam Dell, the father of 'Top Chef' host Padma Lakshmi's baby, filed a lawsuit for the full custody of their 11-month-old daughter Krishna. And it seems Dell is ready to break out the big guns, claiming that Lakshmi once told him she hoped he had nothing to do with the pregnancy.

According to the Daily Mail, in Dell's 16-page lawsuit, he is claiming that when he and Lakshmi were dating in 2009, she was also dating 70-year-old IMG boss Ted Forstmann.

Lakshmi is currently in a relationship with Forstmann.

Dell is claiming that Lakshmi hoped Forstmann was Krishna's father and not Dell. He said Lakshmi refused to put his name on the birth certificate "to minimize, if not eliminate [Dell's] role in Krishna's life and to install Forstmann as Krishna's father."

Dell also mentions that Lakshmi launched a verbal attack on him during a phone call in September 2009, calling him an "unambitious" man with an "uninteresting" career and "unmemorable" friends.

The suit also claims, "Forstmann declared that Lakshmi, Krishna and he are a 'family' and they wished [Dell] would f***ing disappear."

Lakshmi's lawyer, Jay Silverstein, however, called Dell's suit "inaccurate and misleading" and is quoted saying, "We were in the process of negotiating permanent visitation rights when Dell terminated negotiations and this suit was filed. He remains more interested in garnering media attention than focusing on the welfare of his daughter."

Silverstein added that Lakshmi was looking forward to correcting the record in the courts and not in the press.

He said, "[Lakshmi] is saddened and gravely disappointed that Mr. Dell has chosen a very public means of filing his petition with the court rather than doing so in a confidential or sealed manner which is customary in cases involving a very young child."

This seems to be my next destination.  I'm getting so many reaching outs of concerns on me going to Nigeria.  I am sure I will be safe.  There will be a security team accompanying us so...my thinking is always "que sera, sera".  I don't live my life worried about what COULD happen.  Hell, I COULD go outside to checck my mail, slide on some ice, fall, bust my head open and die.  Do I go about thinking about that? NO.  If it is my day, that is what it is.  I dont stress about things like that.  Especially taking into consideration the situations and circumstances that I have found myself in...ie the DMZ, snorkeling into a school of sharks, sky diving.  I am not afraid of death, I love life.  I can't wait to go to Nigeria!  I'm ecstatic about it really.  This place is absolutely beautiful!!!!

Wine of the Week - Frontera Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Chile Wine
So I have been trying many different wines lately. Last night, with the recommendation of the package store attendant, I purchased this one. I am usually a semi-sweet wine type (Sweet Riesling or Sweet Red), this one turns out to be a great buy! Full bodied, I won't say that it is dry but the finish seems to be a little dry. It is a pretty decent wine for the price. Besides, I had never tried a blend before this one. Not bad--not bad at all!!

Chef of the Month

Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto

Photobucket

Masaharu Morimoto (森本正治 Morimoto Masaharu; born May 26, 1955 in Hiroshima, Japan) is a well-known Japanese chef, best-known as the third (and last) Iron Chef Japanese on the TV cooking show Iron Chef, and an Iron Chef on its spinoff, Iron Chef America. Morimoto's costume on Iron Chef is silver with red trim and a picture on the back of Japanese and American flags tied together in a sheaf, while on Iron Chef America he dons the standard blue Iron Chef outfit with white trim. In his professional life, to distinguish himself from his on-screen persona, Morimoto wears (purely aesthetic) glasses.

Morimoto received practical training in sushi and traditional Kaiseki cuisine in Hiroshima, and opened his own restaurant in that city in 1980. Influenced by western cooking styles, he decided to sell his restaurant in 1985 in order to travel around the United States and his travels further influenced his fusion style of cuisine. He established himself in Manhattan, New York City, and worked in some of that city's more prestigious restaurants, including the dining area for Sony Corporation's executive staff and visiting V.I.Ps., the Sony Club, where he was executive chef, and the exclusive Japanese restaurant Nobu, where he was head chef.

It was during his time at Nobu where he got his start on the Iron Chef television show. Several months after the weekly run of Iron Chef ended in 1999, he left Nobu, eventually opening his own Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia in 2001. He has plans to open a second Morimoto restaurant in New York City.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Morimoto currently appears as an Iron Chef in Iron Chef America, a spin-off from the original Japanese "Iron Chef" series.

Ask Chef L Boogie: Olive Oil as Anal Sex Lubricant?

Photobucket

Hi Chef L Boogie:

Two months ago I met an amazing man from Spain, we had a hot affair during the time that he was visiting my city and he told me that he was a collector of olive oil. We talked about having anal sex during the time that he was here but it never happened. Anyway, I am planning a trip to Spain to visit him and I thought about bringing him a nice bottle of olive oil to be used as a lubricant for our anal adventures! But my question is: is it a safe lubricant in terms of keeping the condom from breaking?

Thank you! Hot for Spain

Dear Hot for Spain,

Olive oil + latex condom = broken condom! Avoid using latex with any oil, oil-based lube, or petroleum products.

That's the quick answer, but there's much more that can be said about safer sex, condoms, lube, and erotic olive oil options.

A good lubricant for anal sex is essential. Lube makes anal sex more pleasurable, decreases risk of condom-breakage, and helps protect sensitive tissue. If you are using latex condoms, or any other latex barriers such as gloves or dental dams, olive oil should be avoided because oils and oil-based lubricants and lotions cause latex to break down. For any sexual activity using latex barriers, water-based or silicone-based lubricants are recommended.

Water-based lube, the most oft-recommended kind, can be used safely with latex and with silicone toys and it cleans up easily. Water-based lubes abound at sex novelty stores and drugstores alike. For anal sex, look for non-flavored varieties (flavored lube often has sugar and other ingredients that may cause irritation in penetrative anal or vaginal sex). Water-based lubricants may be somewhat sticky when they dry, but can be refreshed easily by adding water, saliva, or more lube.

Some people prefer silicone-based lube for anal sex because it typically has a slicker quality, stays wetter longer, and does not dry sticky. Like water-based lube, silicone is safe for use with latex. The body does not absorb silicone, which means it won't clog pores, but it may be more difficult to wash off (and out) of the body. Silicone lube will damage silicone sex toys, so the two should not be used together unless there is a condom on the toy.

Olive oil may be an option for lubricant if you use polyurethane condoms instead of latex. However, a word of caution with regard to olive oil and orifices: It may be difficult to remove, may clog pores, or may cause infection or irritation, so it is not recommended for internal use (except for eating, of course). Olive oil may be used erotically in other ways though, as an external masturbatory lubricator (probably safer for use on the penis than the clitoris) for example, or as massage oil with very little risk of any of the health concerns noted above (thought it may stain sheets). If you decide to use olive oil externally first, and have sex after, even if you use silicone or water-based lube, polyurethane condoms are still recommended rather than latex because the condom may have come into contact with olive oil residue left on the sheets or on other parts of the body.

Here's to overseas adventures with slippery substances!

Ask Chef L Boogie: Is Sperm Fattening?

Dear chef L Boogie,

I’m very vain about my figure. I’m in great shape, ride my bike 120 miles a week, watch what I eat, and count every calorie. So, here’s my question: How many calories are in semen? My boyfriend and I enjoy oral sex about three times a week. Is it fattening?

Shy Girl

-----

Shy Girl,

When sperm leaves the human male, it travels at a speed of 27 miles-an-hour. It weighs in at about a teaspoon, contains three times the vitamins of a Jolly Rancher and fairly explodes with protein (about the same as an egg white.) As for calories? 5-7. Fewer than a cherry Life Saver. Bon Appetit!

Best Found Recipe of the Month - Banana Pancakes with Rum Syrup

Ready in: 30-60 minutes

Ingredients:
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup milk
1/4 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons corn oil
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
1 tablespoon butter (melted)

***Rum Syrup***
1 cup pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons dark Jamaican rum

Directions:

Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl.

In a separate bowl combine milk, sugar, 2 tablespoons of the oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Add to the dry ingredients and stir until the mixture is almost smooth.

Next, fold the bananas into the batter. Let this set, loosely covered, for about 25 minutes.

Combine the melted butter with the remaining oil. Place a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Pour a teaspoon of the butter and oil mixture in the skillet and heat.

For each pancake, pour 1/4 cup batter into the pan and cook until small bubbles form on the top, usually about 1 minute.

Turn the pancake over and cook an additional 30 to 45 seconds. Proceed with the rest of the batter, adding more of the bitter and oil mixture to the pan as necessary.

Serve warm with the rum syrup.

For Rum Syrup: Combine all the ingredients in a 4 cup microwave safe measuring cup. Cook on medium high power for 2 minutes, until the butter is melted. Stir and serve hot.
